    Avian Influenza causes Culling of 242 Birds in Denpasar

    Denpasar - Avian influenza incidence in Bali is continuing to spread. After 2 days ago a 8 year old child from Bangli died from the disease, on Thursday (26/4/2012) a total of 242 birds from Satria Bird Market, Denpasar, were culled by Bali Provincial Livestock and Animal Health Services because of avian influenza.
    Limited culling was done after officers in charge of spraying disinfectant found 2 dead chickens in the market. After we tested, the chickens were positive for avian influenza, said Head of the Livestock and Animal Health Service Office of Bali Province, I Putu Sumantra, after the culling.

    Worldwide live animal trade plays a large role in moving animal species to various parts of the world, including Indonesia. This development enables the introduction of alien species into the ecosystem of a country. Such introduction must be controlled because it could cause degradation of the native ecosystem and spread animal and human disease globally. The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) requires every country, including Indonesia, to prevent the introduction of alien species that can threaten the ecosystem, habitat, and native species, commonly known as Invasive Alien Species (IAS).

    Bogor 8 Januari 2011. In celebration of the 5^th Anniversary of Center for Indonesian Veterinary Analytical Studies (CIVAS), CIVAS held a National Seminar on Ecohealth Approaches in the Control of Emerging and Re-Emerging Infectious Diseases. The seminar was aimed to introduce and disseminate the concept of ecohealth to various people in the animal health and public health sector, starting from policy makers, plan developers, researchers, academicians, and animal health and public health practitioners.

    Detection of Avian Influenza Virus in Poultry Collecting Facilities (PCFs) in DKI Jakarta

    One study currently ongoing in CIVAS is a study on the Detection of Avian Influenza in Poultry Collecting Facilities (PCFs) in DKI Jakarta. The study is now entering its 5^th month. It was designed based on previous studies in 2007 and 2008 where samples from 192 dead sentinel found 95.31% of the samples positive for H5 with rt-PCR tests. Also in the previous study, 32 of 38 (84.2%) PCFs studied were AI infected or in other words H5 AI viruses were found present in 84.2% PCFs studied.
